The 4th Biennial Tribal Drinking Water Conference

The 4th Biennial Tribal Drinking Water Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 (US EPA R9) and Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), took placed this May in Tempe, Arizona, at the beautiful Tempe Mission Palms Hotel.

Flushing out funding uses

The public can now learn what happens to all the stuff that goes down their drains and toilets by taking a tour of the El Dorado Hills Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tour was an eye-opener for the participants, who did not often think about wastewater treatment until they get their bills and wonder how the costs are determined.

Colorado Distribution Operator Training Series

For the next nine months, water distribution operators in Colorado will have the opportunity to attend free classes for small drinking water systems across the Front Range and Western Slope.

Homes for Islanders Move-In Ceremony

New homeowners, Homes for Islanders (HFI) staff, and a good showing of family, friends, neighbors and supporters gathered at Rosario Resort’s Discovery House on May 5 to honor the completion of eight homes on Orcas Island.

Self-Help Housing builds family homes, self-respect

A friend told Rebecca Lamb that a new group of homes would be going up in Pole Line Estates, but, these weren’t the run of the mill speculative houses, or custom cottages that developers erect. These homes were part of the Mutual Self-Help Housing program, partially built by the owners.

Northern California housing counselors strategize

Because of the nation’s severe housing crisis, those who offer counseling and assistance to potential homeowners and renters are particularly challenged to serve all those in need. One particular segment that requires more attention these days is foreclosure counseling.

Deer Lodge Groundbreaking

Construction has begun on the site of the new hospital in Deer Lodge, Montana. The new 43,000 SF Deer Lodge Medical Center will replace the existing 46-year old Powell County Medical Center. The hospital will not use any county taxpayer money to build the new hospital; the Powell County Memorial Hospital replacement facility was financed with $17.855 million of tax-exempt bonds.

Mountainlands Community Housing Trust completes construction on 50th home

Mountainlands Community Housing Trust (MCHT) is a nonprofit agency that believes people should have the opportunity to live in the community in which they work without spending a disproportionate amount of their income on housing. They recently received a $1.4 million acquisition loan for a self-help development of 14 homes.

CDFI Fund Announces $104.9 Million in Awards

RCAC was recently awarded $750,000 from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund. Out of the $104.9 million, RCAC received the largest allotment given to one organization.


General News

Opportunity Finance Network Hosts 26th Annual Conference

Each fall, Opportunity Finance Network (OFN) hosts a conference bringing together Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) from throughout the country for three days of networking, knowledge sharing and industry updates. The 2010 event, entitled “Capital Justice: If Not Now, When?” will be held in San Francisco, California on Nov. 2-5.

RCAC celebrates the 29th Yoneo Ono Award recipient

RCAC honored Kay Clarke Philip with the 2010 Yoneo Ono outstanding rural volunteer award in Carbondale, Colorado on Aug. 4. The celebration was held in the midst of majestic red rock mountains at the Eagle’s View Restaurant in the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Northern California gains Native American community leaders

A diverse new group of community leaders graduated on Aug. 21 from an extensive leadership development training program held in Mendocino County, California. The closing ceremony took place at Consolidated Tribal Health Project, Inc’s Wellness Center just outside of Ukiah.
