RCAC staff members improve personal and organization capacity

Chris Marko elected to Partners
for Rural America board.

Earlier this year, Chris Marko, RCAC rural development specialist providing technical assistance primarily in Oregon, was elected vice chair of Partners for Rural America (PRA), a nonprofit arm of the National Rural Development Partnership (NRDP). NRDP is the umbrella organization for State Rural Development Councils (SRDCs) as authorized in the Farm Bill 2008. NRDP is directed by Congress to “empower and build the capacity of states and rural communities to design flexible and innovative responses to their own special rural development needs, with local determinations of progress and selection of projects and activities.” The purpose of SRDCs is to “facilitate” collaboration among federal, state, local and tribal governments and the private and nonprofit sectors in planning and implementation of programs and policies that have an impact on rural areas of the state.” There are 30 federally recognized SRDC’s. Olga Morales

Olga Morales helps rural
New Mexico communities.

The New Mexico legislature approved the Colonias Infrastructure Funding Bill, SB 279 earlier this year. The new legislation will provide approximately $10 million annually in state funding for infrastructure needs in small disadvantaged New Mexico communities. Olga Morales, RCAC rural development specialist played a key role in securing passage of this legislation. She appeared before committees and met with members of the legislature to promote the bill.
