February is black history month
Black history month gives all Americans a chance to celebrate the significant roles African Americans have played in shaping U.S. history. Carter G. Woodson pioneered the study of African American history. He is given the credit for starting Negro History Week in 1926, which later became Black History Month.
On founding Negro History Week, Woodson said, “We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice.
