New SHARES Really is coming…

By Nancy Jacobsen, RCAC rural development specialist

We reported in our last issue that the new SHARES program would be rolling out soon; well soonreallyis just around the corner. We experienced a short delay as the consultant wanted to eliminate the requirement to login twice like we currently are required to do. In addition, the consultant has produced a training video and a User Guide link on the Help page in the new SHARES program. The new program should be worth the wait with these time saving steps, which will make it more user friendly and cut data entry time down considerably. We can expect an email with information about accessing the training video along with the date for the program conversion within the next few weeks.

Once again, we are asking that all of you who use SHARES to update your login and password if you have not done this recently. Instructions can be found at the end of this article. If you are updating, or are a new user to SHARES, please forward your login ONLY, no passwords please to either Debra Cunningham at DCunningham@rcac.orgor myself at NJacobsen@rcac.org.

National Rural Development is requesting an updated contact list for all SHARES users, which includes your login, to link each user to their organization’s SHARES. You will login and be directly routed to your own SHARES access.

  1. Log into: https://shares.sc.egov.usda.gov/shares/, click I agree,
  2. Choose “Create an Account” under Quick Links
  3. Request Level 2 Access
  4. Fill out the form and submit. You will receive verification within one day. Afterward, you will have to have your ID verified in person by the nearest Rural Development Security officer. Access will be granted once this step is completed.
  5. If you have SHARES access but it has lapsed choose “Update Account” under the Quick Links, Step 2 above.

Keep in mind that your password is only good for six months and you cannot use dictionary words. When it is time to change your password, simply choose another letter to capitalize. For example, if I chose “Diggy28*” when the time comes to update it, I could then use “diGgy28*”.

As always, your comments and suggestions for items to include in SHARES Tidbits are welcome. If you need SHARES help, you may contact your technical assistance provider or me at (406) 579-5202; or e-mail at njacobsen@rcac.org.
