June 23, 2008

West Sacramento, Calif. — Jon Townsend has been appointed president of the board of directors for Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC). A member of the Muskogee (Creek) Indian Nation, Townsend has served on the RCAC board since 2000.  Mr. Townsend is a West Linn, Oregon resident.

“Jon has a deep understanding of RCAC’s history and our goals and visions,” said RCAC Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Keasling. “He also adds valuable insights into the work we do with Native Americans, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Natives.”

RCAC is headquartered in West Sacramento, California, and serves 13 Western states. The organization provides technical assistance and training to rural and Native American communities that seek to develop a wide range of community services such as affordable housing, and water and wastewater facilities. The organization also operates a loan fund with $65 million in lending capital that provides low-interest loans and grants to further these communities’ goals. Under contract with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, RCAC provides circuit rider oversight to Tribal system operators in California and Arizona.

“It is an honor and pleasure to serve as board chair during this time in our organizational history.  RCAC has a deep, durable and highly productive history of successful partnerships with rural and Tribal Governments and organizations and the board is currently working towards expanding these partnership models and activities with new rural and Tribal entities.  The staff and leadership of RCAC are exceptional in their knowledge of rural and Tribal needs and in their holistic and pragmatic approach to meeting those needs.  I am looking forward in continuing and expanding the outstanding work of RCAC.”

As a principal in Agreement Works, Townsend provides international training and consultation in interest-based negotiations, workplace and cross-cultural mediation, business and labor management negotiations, inter-cultural communication/workforce diversity, as well as community- and organization-related issues. He holds a master’s degree in psychology from Sonoma State University.
