West Sacramento, Calif. — June is National Homeownership Month, and Rural
Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) applauds housing counselors who help consumers
achieve sustainable homeownership through access to professional housing
counseling and homebuyer education.
Housing counselors guide consumers who are buying or renting a
home, are homeless, seeking reverse mortgages, have credit issues or are at
risk of default or foreclosure. They also provide first time homebuyer
education, help buyers select the right mortgage product and avoid predatory
lenders. A recent U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) study states that struggling homeowners who
receive housing counseling are 67 percent more likely to remain current on
their mortgage after receiving a loan modification than non-counseled
borrowers. RCAC housing counseling agencies have helped more than
100,000 clients since 2004.
RCAC is a HUD-approved national intermediary and provides
technical assistance, training, and financial support to a network of housing
counseling agencies that serve rural communities throughout nine western states.
RCAC's Housing Counseling program builds the capacity of established and
emerging housing counseling agencies, including tribal based organizations. Last
year, this resulted in services to more than 24,000 clients. For a nationwide
list of HUD approved housing counseling agencies, visit HUD's website: http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/ohc_nint.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau,
homeownership in the U.S. hit a 17-year low in 2013. According to a recent
Gallup poll, Americans still value homeownership.
“RCAC believes that strong housing counseling agencies that
deliver quality client services are key to developing strong, resilient rural
communities,” said Joni Foster, director of housing and community programs.
Founded in 1978,
RCAC provides a wide range of community development services for rural and
Native American communities, and community-based organizations in 15 western states
and the Pacific islands. RCAC has strong core services and expertise in
housing, environmental infrastructure (water, wastewater and solid waste),
leadership training, economic development and financing. To find out more about
