Housing group lands $700K grant; 21 'sweat equity' homes in store

With a $700,000 grant in the bag, Homes for Islanders scaled another hurdle in its pursuit to build 21 new 'sweat equity' homes in Friday Harbor.
On Monday, Homes for Islanders announced that the USDA-Rural Development awarded the San Juan Island-based affordable housing group a two-year, $700,000 Technical Assistance grant that will help cover the cost of staff, supplies, supervision, training and overhead toward the construction of 21 so-called "self-help" homes in Friday Harbor.
