RCAC loan helps city of Wendell bring sewer system into compliance

Loan Fund Project Highlight

Where: Wendell, Idaho

Need: The city of Wendell had a commitment from USDA to upgrade its sewer system, but could not move forward until it could pay the project engineer for work completed to date.

Solution: RCAC provided a short-term loan to pay for engineering work so the project could proceed

The city of Wendell is in south central Idaho in Gooding County, approximately 95 miles southeast of Boise. The 2000 Census Bureau reports 2,338 residents living in Wendell, with a Median Household Income of $29,390.

After the city outgrew its sewer system, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) issued it a Notice of Violation and fine for noncompliance with its Wastewater Land Application Permit. The city had to take quick action to address the violations, and RCAC was part of the solution.

The city pursued and was awarded $11 million in funding from the USDA and the state of Idaho to make necessary repairs and upgrades to bring the system into compliance. However, significant engineering work had to be completed by the city before the project funding would be made available, so RCAC made a loan of $221,000 to pay for these costs.
